Dog itching can be caused for many reasons. This can be an aggravating situation for your dog. If your dog itches too much, they can cause damage to their skin and sometimes cause infection. When your dog itches, it is important to first detect the reason that they are having an itching problem. If you do not know what could be making your dog itch it is best to take them to the vet for a checkup to detect the problem. The vet will determine what the problem is and give your dog the best treatment available.
Several things such as fleas, dry skin from shampooing frequently, mange, allergies, and other irritations of the skin can cause dog itching. Fleas can lead to hot spots on a dog if the itching is severe. The first thing you need to do is give your pet an effective flea treatment and then purchase sprays, ointments and medication from your vet to clear up any infection from the hot spots. When a person shampoos their dog too often the dog can get dry skin. It is best to only give your dog a bath when they really need one, because the shampoo can strip the oils from their coat creating dry skin. If you do shampoo your dog often, look for gentle and natural shampoos that will not dry your pets coat out.
Another cause of dog itching is allergies. This problem could be caused from what you are feeding your dog to things in the environment around them. Changing their diet is the first thing that you could try and then change their bedding and take away other things that they are around each day to see if the itching stops after a couple days. You may be able to narrow it down, but if the itching does not cease after a short time take them to the vet.
